NSSA Nationals is the alleged Superbowl of amateur surfing, although it’s more of a surf industry horse race. Company’s scout each region, choosing their horses and send them off to the races. Some turtles are gambles, as nobody knows how they will perform under the gaudy eyes of a nation searching for the next Slater. The word “future” is thrown around with little regard for repetitiveness. Under-educated youth waft fins, collecting pay checks for much more money than the lowly souls employed to educate them. It is a clash of surfers, of regions, of companies, of surf coaches and no winner no dinner parents. It is very serious.
Oh yeah, and Chris Tucker just won.
